According to GGII data, the sales of new energy vehicles in China will reach approximately 567.4 units in the first half of 2025, a year-on-year increase of 33%; The installed capacity of power batteries is about 288.1 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 44%.
In terms of battery shape, cylindrical power batteries have the highest year-on-year growth rate, with a growth rate of 51% and an installed capacity of 6.2 GWh.
The number of cylindrical battery installed vehicles will continue to expand in the first half of 2025.
GGII pointed out that in the first half of 2025, six new models will adopt cylindrical batteries compared to the same period, including Wuling Hongguang REEV, Lingbao BOX, Ruifeng RF8 PHEV, Changan Yidong PHEV, Yuanhang H8, and Yuanhang Y6.
Among them, the batteries installed in Wuling Hongguang REEV and Lingbao BOX are iron lithium cylindrical batteries, which are respectively equipped with multi fluorine and medium ratio new energy.
The Ruifeng RF8 PHEV, Changan Yidong PHEV, Yuanhang H8, and Yuanhang Y6 are all ternary cylindrical batteries matched with EVE Energy. Except for Changan Yidong PHEV, all other installed models are C-class or D-class cars.
The above three companies are representatives of China's previous heavy investment in cylindrical battery technology, and their previous bets will be realized in the first half of 2025.
Yiwei Lithium Energy disclosed in April this year that the yield rate of its large cylindrical batteries has increased from over 80% when it was put into production in early 2023 to a level of 97%, solving the welding and metal chip control problems of the full pole ear process.
Previously, the large cylindrical production lines of EVE Energy located in Jingmen, Hubei (Sanyuan) and Qujing, Yunnan (LFP) have both been put into mass production. The company is building a new factory in Hungary, Europe, and has planned three large cylindrical production lines with the goal of achieving mass production by the end of 2025.
At the end of June, EVE Energy's Shenyang Large Cylinder Model Factory will conduct trial production. Starting from 2022, EVE Energy has established a partnership with BMW Group to supply large cylindrical batteries for its "new generation" models, with plans to achieve mass production of related products by 2026. In the future, with the completion and operation of the Hungarian factory, EVE Energy will directly supply the European market.
In addition, in February of this year, the subsidiary of EVE Energy received a designated notice from FAW Besturn regarding the large cylindrical battery, which will be used in the field of new energy passenger vehicles. In March, the company received a designated notice for the Changan Automobile HEV battery assembly project. The product is a cylindrical battery, mainly used for Changan hybrid vehicle models.
Zhongbi New Energy has three major production bases in Nanjing, Dalian, and Shangqiu. The products include high-energy lithium iron series/super energy ternary series/high rate series/full pole ear series/low temperature resistant series, covering multiple cylindrical 26 series and large cylindrical 32 series batteries. Among them, in 2024, the production capacity of the 32 series large cylindrical battery products at the Nanjing base reached 1.5 GWh, with a shipment quantity of over 20 million units.
In May of this year, Dalian Zhongbi's high-performance cylindrical 40 type lithium battery intelligent production line factory with a total investment of 1 billion yuan was capped. We mainly produce iron lithium cylindrical batteries and introduce a 120ppm fully automatic lithium-ion battery production line. After reaching full capacity, our annual production capacity will exceed 3GWh.
Duofuduo recently disclosed that its core product, fluorine core large cylindrical batteries, had a shipment volume of 8.8 million units in July, a year-on-year increase of 45%, reaching a historical high; The expected shipment volume for August is expected to exceed 9.5 million units. In addition, the third-generation full pole ear cylindrical battery has achieved mass production. Compared with the previous generation products, innovations such as direct connection between the shell and electrode, bidirectional pressure relief technology, and single-sided busbar design have significantly improved safety, energy density, and production efficiency.
In terms of production capacity planning, by October this year, the production capacity of multi fluorine multi large cylindrical batteries will be increased from the current 14GWh to 22GWh, covering the full range of 40-65Ah specifications, meeting the needs of multiple fields such as electric two wheelers, tricycles, energy storage, and commercial vehicles.
In addition, the core driving force for the installation of cylindrical batteries is still LGES supplying Tesla Model Y and Model 3, with a year-on-year increase of 51.4% in related supporting installations.
But in fact, Tesla's sales performance in the domestic market was not good in the first half of the year. According to the latest data, Tesla's sales in the Chinese market in the first half of 2025 were 263400 units, a year-on-year decrease of about 5.4% from 278300 units in the same period of 2024.
The reason for the increase in installed capacity is partly due to the increase in battery capacity itself. At the beginning of the year, foreign media reported that the new battery supplied by LGES to Tesla China has a cell capacity of 5300mAh, which is 6% higher than the previous 5000mAh. The battery is produced at LGES' Nanjing factory.
In addition, LGES cylindrical batteries are mainly installed on Tesla Model Y and Model 3 long-range and high-performance versions. In the first half of the year, Tesla launched a 5-year zero coupon policy and a refreshed version of the Tesla Y, which played a positive role in the sales growth of related models and drove the increase in LGES cylindrical installation.
